Esteban Gurzov, PhD

PI-Coordinator, Université libre de Bruxelles

My laboratory’s work in the field of metabolism and diabetes has a growing international reputation with publications in Cell, Cell Metabolism, Nature Communications, Diabetes, Cell Death & Differentiation, Oncogene etc. The current forward momentum of my career is evidenced by recent publications as senior author, funding as sole PI, and invitations to speak at international conferences. I have also consistently secured competitive salary support in the past and was awarded project grants as PI to support my laboratory's research, including the NHMRC new investigator grant, Diabetes Australia DART grant, EFSD/JDRF/Lilly Programme in Type 1 Diabetes Research, FNRS MIS, FNRS PDR, FNRS CDR, FNRS WELBIO, JDRF Career Development Award, and ERC Consolidator Grant. I was granted an Associate Research tenured position (FNRS) and moved my team from Australia to Belgium in 2017. In 2021, I was appointed an Honorary Associated Professor (Principal Fellow) at the University of Melbourne. I have uniquely established myself as one of the leading young experts in metabolism and diabetes research. After my training in Australia, I brought to the ULB my particular experience with advanced molecular biology, including complex transgenic models, and first-hand experience on the role of protein tyrosine phosphatases in the development of metabolic disorders, including diabetes and liver cancer. I have developed and consistently pursued an innovative research line on the mechanisms of insulin-producing β-cell dysfunction and death in the pancreas and obesity-associated metabolic dysfunction in the liver. The key strength of my laboratory is the combined use of molecular biology, animal models of diabetes, and human samples to translate research from the bench into clinical practice.
